80mm FAN ADAPTER UPDATE
Here they are folks , the 20mm and 30mm 60 to 80mm fan adapters, it took a while to get to this point because of work commitments . After a quick airflow test , ( putting the fan adapter to my face ) I could not tell the difference between the two . A few people have noted that due to the design back pressure may be a problem , well it s there , the adapter works , the results are OK , and there is not much you can do about it unless you want to pay big $$ , so Im going to try twin piggy back fans. The twin fan set up really improves the airflow, when the adapter is not mounted on a heatsink , and this is how Im going to test the 20 and 30mm versions.
SYSTEM
ASUS A7V133c , AMD T-BIRD 1000 @ 1066MHZ ( 8 X 133MHZ BUS ) , ARKUA 7528
42deg C doing 3Dmark2001 benchmarks , room temp 22-23deg celsius , with the ARKUA 7528 side cover on.
20mm Fan Adapter
Again I will use the Volcano 6Cu as the test bench, the 20mm 60 to 80mm fan adapter will have two standard 80mm BB fans bolted on piggy back style , for the test, as we are comparing the two adapters this time around.
The stock Volcano 6Cu gave 44deg Celsius under load ( 3Dmark2001 benchmark ) side cover off. And with the 20mm fan adapter and twin 80mm fans.
Well thats not too bad , a 2deg Celsius loss in cooling with two standard 80mm fans, now the thing here to remember is that the main concern is noise , and IM not kidding when I say , what noise? . seriously folks , this set up reminds me of the old 200MMX days, when all you could hear was a slight humming noise.
30mmFan Adapter
Here we can see that it would appear that the 20mm adapter is the slightly better of the two, which is good because it will also be the cheaper to produce. So just to be sure , I will test the 20 one more time.
There we go , the same result , so it would seem that it maters not if you run one fan or two, hmmm , there would seem to have been more blow with two fans than one when testing out of the computer, oh well .
CONCLUSION
One fan or two , would seem that it maters not, Noise? , what noise. It would seem that a high performance 80mm fan is a must to get the most out of the 60 to 80mm fan adapter, 20mm high or 30mm high , maters not. So in the end it all comes down to the fan, the more powerful the fan the better the cooling . ( hell we all knew this already right ) The only free lunch that you get from going to a 80mm fan adapter is a reduction in noise, so what we need to see is a increase in the number of high performance 80mm fans available for sale , as at the moment there a little scarce. So if the 60mm high performance fan is driving you crazy , you better give the 80mm fan adapters serious consideration.
