I was going to test all 3 Eagle GF4mx cards , but unfortunately the GF4mx460 card didn't fire up when plugged into my computer , so I'm going to have to leave it out for now , but hopefully I will be able to get my hands on another shortly so as to make this review complete .

The idea was to give you the reader an idea of just where the performance levels of each type of card lay , so as to make an informed choice should you decide that the GF4mx was for you .

Looking at the cards , each is indistinguishable from the others ( they look exactly alike ) , so to start this review off I will be starting with the GF4mx420 card , the Eagle GF4mx420 being supplied with 64meg of Hynix 6ns DDR ram. Please keep in mind that the benchmarks are down ( due to this card GF4mx not liking the latest Via 4in1 drivers and possibly Direct X8.1 / read MSI GF4mx review ). Do we all know about the GF4mx problems and KT333 compatibility problems , well I hope we all do . In anyway if you read the MSI GF4mx review you will find the best combination of drivers if you are experiencing problems .

GF4mx420 Epox 8k3a / xp1700 @ 11x166 1.75v / Maxtor 7200 ATA133 40gig / Via 4.40 / Det 29.42 / Direct X8.1/ Win98SE / 256mb PC2700 Samsung /

This is the base card in the GF4mx range , and many come with SDram as opposed to DDR ram , which is what you get on this card . I will say it now , rather than later , if your ho-huming over a GF2mx400 , forget it , the Eagle GF4mx420 DDR will walk all over the GF2mx400 , for only a few dollars more . Onto the benchmarks , starting with Quake .

800x600x16bit = 181.1FPS

1024x768x16bit = 124.5FPS

1280x1024x16bit = 79.8FPS

3Dmark2001SE

DEFAULT SPEED = 4113 3Dmarks [ 250mhz Core / 333mhz Mem ]

280mhz Core Clock / 380mhz Mem Clock = 4719 3Dmarks

290mhz Core Clock / 390mhz Mem Clock = 4838 3Dmarks

315mhz Core Clock / 440mhz Mem Clock = 5380 3Dmarks

Well I decided to cut to the chase with the overclock , but as you can see there is plenty of head room , in fact I was unable to max out the ram overclocking this card , Power Strip would not allow me to go higher than 440mhz on the Mem , the Hynix 6ns ram having plenty of head room , seriously folks , this card not only beats out the GF2mx400 but when overclocked gives the GF2titanium a serious run for its money , and using some other software for overclocking may allow you to push the ram higher than 440mhz , for even higher benchmarks .

GF4mx440

I've tested this card before , but then the card was equipped with Samsung ram , the max overclock was 340mhz Core / 490mhz Mem , and came with passive cooling in the way of a heatsink and no fan . This time round , the card comes with a orb style cooler on the GPU and is outfitted with Hynix 5ns ram , time to see what it can do : Quake :

800x600x16bit = 203.1FPS

1024x768x16bit = 149.4FPS

1280x1024x16bit = 96.6FPS

3Dmark2001SE

Default Speed = 4971 3Dmarks [ 270mhz Core / 405mhz Mem ]

Going straight to the max overclock :

360mhz Core Clock / 540mhz Mem Clock = 6390 3Dmarks

Power strip was maxed out on both Core and Memory here , there were minor artifacts showing up , meaning that the mem or core was maxed out , still , the mem and core went all the way , with only power strip holding things back , whoa , I think the overclocking potential is just fantastic .

Conclusion:

Both cards will most likely give better benchmarks etc with the following combination of drivers / VIA 4in1 4.38 , Direct X8 and Det 28.32 Drivers , so try the combination , you may see a very nice boost in performance . The Gf4mx460 just does not work at all on my Epox 8k3a , a real shame , as it would have been nice to see what the card would have been capable off . Both the GF4mx420/440 cards were serious overclockers , giving a very nice boost to performance , intel users wont have any conflict problems at all from any of these cards , its just us poor KT333 owners that have to shop carefully .
